So, I have been reading a book titled Cognitive Science: An Introduction to the Science of the Mind by José Luis Bermúdez. It is a textbook that delves deep into the field of cognitive science and what it really is. The reason I am reading this book because I want to become a neurologist. Early preparation and groundwork are very important for me and my desired career path. Now you may be asking why am I not then reading a neurology book? the science of the mind is an interdisciplinary field. Cognitive science can be divided into 4 main sciences: psychology, linguistics, neurology, computer science. These four can be further divided into smaller sub-fields, such as neurogenetics. So, the reason, I am reading this to have at least some knowledge in the other fields. Early on, you start to pick up the theme which is cognitive science’s definition you could say. What is cognitive science? Is it its own field? The book strives to explain this. Chapter 1 is the short history of cognitive science and its landmark scientific studies. Section 3 focuses on the ‘turn to the brain’ and neurology. Early in the evolution of cognitive science, neurology wasn’t considered to be at the core of cognitive science as opposed to today where it may be the most relevant. Neurology is the science of the nervous system. It is vital to our understanding of cognition. It doesn’t cover all of it though. It covers where cognition happens for different events and the systems that allow it to happen. It doesn’t cover what the ‘how’ or ‘why’ if you will of the science of the mind. Neurology can be compared to the hardware of a computer. It has the circuits to make everything work, but it needs software to run. And I think all this is all very interesting and I hope you did too. As I read more of the book, I will post more talking about different aspects of cognitive science. I will leave a link below if you are interested in checking it out.
